Goldenseal Root Tincture
( Hydrastis canadensis )
Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), is a wild perennial herb native to North America. The Native Americans used Goldenseal internally as a medicine, and externally as a wash. They also used the root to make dye. Goldenseal is an antibacterial and antiseptic. Use especially when mucus turns thick and discolored. Use short term only with other herbs.
While both the herb and the root are useful herbal supplements, the thick-knotted yellow root is more potent, having a higher alkaloid content, than the herb (leaves, stems and flowers). Golden Seal is a very important traditional herb. Golden Seal was listed from 1860 to 1926 in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia. It was primarily used for inflammations of the mucous membranes.
This herb gets its name from the golden yellow color of the root. Goldenseal, a supplement, has been considered to have strong medicinal properties and does not harm the beneficial bacteria that are necessary in the digestive tract. The alkaloid, Berberine, has the added benefit of increasing blood flow through the spleen, where it also increases the immune-building activity of the large supply of white blood cells there. Considered by many herbalists to be one of the most powerful herbs.
Digestive System
The goldenseal herb has properties that stimulate appetite, aid digestion, often increase the production of bile and cure digestive problems. It also has an astringent effect in addition to certain antibacterial properties which work effectively in treating digestive tract conditions like gastritis, e coli, and yeast infections. This particular property of the goldenseal herb also works effectively in treating ulcers in the mouth.
Anti-inflammatory, Antibiotic, Antiseptic Properties
The health benefits of goldenseal include its anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and antiseptic properties. These properties help to treat inflammations and infections of the eyes, nose, ear and throat. Conjunctivitis, too, can be effectively treated by using goldenseal eyewash. In addition to the above, goldenseal is a very popular cure for infection of the gums or gingivitis.
The goldenseal root is famous for its natural antibiotic properties and is used to treat cold, flu, strep throat and other upper respiratory tract infections. It is found that using goldenseal root helps reduce cold and flu symptoms considerably. This is mainly because of the berberine content in goldenseal which contains extremely powerful antibiotic and antiseptic properties. These properties help in fighting numerous strains of bacteria and fungi which cause strep throat and other infections.
Gargling with goldenseal tincture is found to be extremely helpful in curing strep throat problems.
Another effective treatment for strep throat is when goldenseal is combined with echinacea and myrrh. Generally, the health benefits of goldenseal are often enhanced when echinacea and goldenseal are combined.
Immune System
The health benefits of goldenseal extend to boosting the immune system, too. Goldenseal contains certain chemical substances which work towards strengthening the immune system by stimulating the activity of blood cells. This property of the goldenseal herb helps in the purification of blood and balances various hormones in the glandular system.
Liver, Spleen, Pancreas, Thyroid, Lymphatic System
The health benefits of goldenseal also include improving the functions of several important organs. Berberine, an active ingredient of goldenseal, works towards increasing blood circulation to the liver and spleen. It also stimulates the secretion of bile. All these properties of goldenseal help in smooth and effective functioning of the pancreas, thyroid, and lymphatic system.
Skin Conditions
A goldenseal mixture, when prepared in the ratio 5 ml of herbal tincture / liquid extract to 100 ml of water, can be used for herbal washes in treating skin infections, inflammations like eczema, and measles.
Female / Women Issues
Another of the health benefits of goldenseal is in aiding with female issues - certain chemical substances in goldenseal help regulate the menstrual cycle in women.
A mixture, prepared by adding 2 - 3 ml of goldenseal tincture / liquid extract to water, can be used as a douche for curing leucorrhea and other forms of vaginal infections. It can also be used with rosewater in the ratio 5 ml to 100 ml to cure vaginal irritation and itching.
Nutrient Content
In addition, the goldenseal herb contains many important and useful vitamins like vitamin A, various B vitamins, vitamin C and vitamin E. It also contains calcium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium selenium, and zinc.
Routes of Administration & Dosage
In tincture form, the dosage would be around 1 to 2 ml of a 1:5 solution taken thrice daily.
Goldenseal tea or goldenseal herb tea can be prepared using 0.5 to 3 teaspoons of goldenseal powder to 1 cup water, and drank two to three times daily.
Suggested Dosage and Use: 20-40 drops in water or juice 2-3 times daily or as needed.
Echinacea Tincture
(USA Echinacea angustifolia)
A natural antibiotic , Anti-bacterial , Anti-fungal , Anti-microbial, Anti-inflammatory , Anti-viral
Health Benefits of Echinacea
Echinacea works to increase the activity of the immune system by stimulating white blood cells, which attack the viruses and bacteria that lead to illness or infection. This also makes it very beneficial for people with AIDS since their immune systems are weakened. This application of Echinacea is being extensively researched, since the full effect of the immune system on AIDS and cancer is still unknown. Echinacea is also every effective in treating respiratory ailments like colds. Some research has found Echinacea to be effective as an antiviral or antifungal, which also helps it fight infection. The full potential of Echinacea, for these applications and others, still needs to be thoroughly studied.
In some parts of Europe, Echinacea is taken in an IV as supplemental treatment for some forms of cancer. Some European medical professionals also inject Echinacea to remedy infections of the urinary tract. However, neither of these practices are common in America.
Echinacea can also be used externally to treat skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It can also be an ingredient in hemorrhoid treatments or to sooth inset bites. Some people use it to shield their skin from sun damage.
Echinacea also appears to be useful for a plethora of other common ailments, and a tea can be made to reduce symptoms of scratchy or sore throat, lymph node inflammation, stomach cramps, and urinary tract infections. There is some indication that it is beneficial in cancer patients, helping to rejuvenate the system after chemotherapy, and it is widely used as a general blood purifier. Externally, it can be made into an Ointment for treatment of insect bites, burns, measles, skin ulcers, herpes sores, cold sores, and yeast infections in women. The Indians swore by it as being an effective anti-venom agent for snakebites, but this hasn't been conclusively proven.
Echinacea is safe to use other than for people with allergies to members of the daisy family. A doctor should be consulted first for people with AIDS, HIV, or other immune system problems.
Suggested Use: 1-2 droppersful 3x daily OR every 2 hours in acute cases. Stop use when illness has passed. Not intended for long-term use. Do not use longer than 2 weeks consecutively as this may render the herb ineffective.
Echinacea is not recommended for use by people with multiple sclerosis, white blood cell disorders, collagen disorders, HIV/AIDS, autoimmune disorders, or tuberculosis.
Elderberry Tincture
Elderberry tincture has long been known as the ‘poor man’s medicine chest’ for its usefulness, but especially its efficacy in treating cold and flu symptoms. Long used throughout Europe and the Americas, elderberry has a long and respected history as an herbal remedy. Both Pliny the Elder and Hippocrates mentioned and recommended elderberry as a medicinal herb in their writings.
Elderberry has a very long history in herbal medicine as a cure for colds, coughs and flus. Elderberry tincture, capsules or dried powdered are often taken along with several other herbs when a cold or flu threatens. According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, the European elder is most commonly used for supplements. It’s also the elderberry tincture most frequently studied for its effect on cold and flu viruses.
The most common uses for elderberry tincture include treatment for:
If you choose to use elderberry tincture to combat a cold or flu, you may wish to combine it with other healing herbs useful to boost the immune system. Echinacea and goldenseal, for example, are recommended for infections, particularly upper respiratory infections. Other herbs may be comforting herbal teas, such as chamomile, and herbal remedies
for bronchitis.
Elderberry tincture tested in the laboratory and in double-blind human studies cut the severity and length of Influenza A and B measurably and significantly IF taken at the onset of symptoms and taken appropriately.
The only known potential side effect of elderberry is that it acts as a diuretic, so if you are taking diuretics or have bladder or kidney problems, discuss using elderberry with your physician before taking this herbal remedy.

Allicin, an active principle of freshly crushed garlic has several antimicrobial activities. In its pure form it was found to exhibit antibacterial activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug-resistant enterotoxicogenic strains of Escherichia coli; antifungal activity, particularly against Candida albicans; antiparasitic activity, including some major human intestinal protozoan parasites (Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia); and antiviral activity. The main antimicrobial effect of allicin (diallyl thiosulphinate) is due to its chemical reaction with thiol groups of various enzymes.
Alliin is the primary ingredient found in garlic.
After garlic is crushed, alliin is converted into allicin, the compound that gives garlic its strong smell and numerous health benefits.
Garlic has been reported to protect against cardiovascular disease by reducing serum cholesterol concentrations and blood pressure and by inhibiting platelet aggregation. Further, garlic has antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help to destroy free radicals.
Ajoene (an unsaturated sulfoxide disulfide), is the principal chemical responsible for garlic's anticoagulant properties. It is a component of allicin, a sulfinyl compound that gives garlic its strong odor and flavor. It is currently being developed as a pharmaceutical for the treatment of blood clotting disorders. This potent phytochemical might reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease. Topic application of ajoene has produced significant clinical response in patients with skin basal cell carcinoma. It was shown to inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis of several human leukaemia CD34-negative cells including HL-60, U937, HEL and OCIM-1.
Some studies report that topical application of garlic may help in fungal skin conditions (Tinea cruris, Tinea corporis).
Precaution
Garlic has a mild blood thinning- and laxative effect.
When using anti-coagulant drugs (Warfarin, Coumadin®, Heparin®, Lovanox®, and Plavix® Aspirin), avoid high doses. Avoid also high doses when pregnant. Garlic intolerance may result in heartburn.
